Thanks Amy, I have used Liquid Story Binder in one of its previous incarnations. The latest version looks great. I haven't tried WriteMonkey but it looks similar to FocusWriter above. But you have a great process there too :)

My two favorite (Windows) writing programs are Liquid Story Binder for anything that needs an outline or structure (fiction or nonfiction) and WriteMonkey for any freewriting, writing prompts, etc. I use WriteMonkey to Just Write Without Distractions and often freewrite something that will need some kind of structure which I then plan out in LSB.

I've had a ton of them over the years, but the moment that jumped out at me while reading was in 1998, when I was back in my hometown for my father's funeral, my mom and I went to a local bookstore together. I flipped through a ton of magazines (being, as always, a media junkie), and there was one, Somerset Studios, that just jumped right off the rack.

I fell in crazy love with the artist on the cover. It was *so different* from all the other stuff I was seeing at the time -- vintage text, strong focus elements, largely monochromatic...all the stuff that was *totally* my style (but much better than I'd ever done).

Artist was Claudine Hellmuth, who went on to write several books about her process actually, and was among the first subscribers to my artzine about 18 months later. I don't know if she knows how influential she was on me, but I still see a little of that first article I read about her when I pick up a brush.

Thought-provoking piece, D. Thanks. :)

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I'm glad you got something out it. I started the research because of my own struggles with my inner critic that just would stop telling me that my words suck. It seemed it was so much easier to write when I didn't know all the "rules", but after taking Warrior Writer by Bob Mayer I started to see how if I understood my process better, I'd write better, and so far its working. Good luck with your idea! Write the ugly, get through the story and characters, clean up later....

When I'm very stuck, I use a site called "Write or Die" - You set how many words you need, how long you want to take to write them, and then select the level of punishment you want to receive. It's a powerful motivator to get writing! Thanks for the tips. :)

wonderful idea- the more I talk to others I have realised how many of us suffer from the 'perfection syndrome'. How many great stories haven't been told because people were scared their words wouldn't be perfect?

PS - and your comment has showed that I need to format these pages a little

Somewhere on the page, I write 'mistake' or another synonymous word or phrase - error, faux pas, botch - anything will do. Then I cross it out. I'm not usually afraid of writing. It's the thought that what I write might not be perfect that makes me hesitate. This gets that concern out of the way.
Full marks for the 'tiny step' comment. So true.
